China now leading emitter of Climate Change ...

"With bated breath we wait for Gore and DiCaprio’s upcoming films critical of China."

Here’s a quick one. If it hasn’t gained official status yet, it will soon. Yet another source reports that China has now “officially” and “clearly” surpassed the United States as the world’s leading emitter of purported climate warming gases.

“Worse, China's emissions are likely to continue growing substantially for years to come because they are tied to the country's strong economic growth and its particular mix of industry and power sources, the researchers said.” Read the rest here

It is now estimated that China's CO2 emissions are about 14% higher than those of the U.S. putting it at the top of the list of CO2 emitting countries with about a quarter (24%) share in total global CO2 emissions. Imagine of you will, the likely Chinese figure in say, 2025?

Can I be bold enough to suggest that apart from the warm and fuzzy emotions it elicits amongst greenies, Kyoto is now – officially - superfluous?

CONGRATULATIONS China, on winning the first Gold Medal of 2008 …

Otto, China does not listen to anyone. if they are #1 in carbon. whatever that means.....They don't care as long as the money keeps rolling in.....stay well....

One of their biggest greenhouse gas emissions is the CO2 in the breath of the 1.3 billion citizens. It's time for a Mel Brooks style film on climate change -- starring Al Gore as the evil not-so-genius.....

It's all so very ridiculous, isn't it?

Sorry I haven't been here for a while..you took a brief hiatus and I have to reorient my mind to remembering you're (gratefully!) back!

Great piece...I wouldn't hold my breath for anyone to chastise China, either. What a GREAT point you make. yet, they want US to sign Kyoto and pay their way? Tie me DOWN!!

It's going to be a long wait. China has been emitting more than the US for a while now, just that it's not broadcast that much by the MSM. They prefer to harp on against America instead, funny that.

Otto, you know that the only enviromental monster according to the Gorwellion crowd is The United States.

China could actually spew millions of tons of floral carbons daily, dump all of their garbage directly in the ocean, polute every waterway in China with bio and nuclear waste and the Gorwellion crowd will say that they are being told to do this and assisted by the USA.

Gore and his cronies attack the US only when it comes to their false agenda because this country is the only place where their false accusations and junk science actually have an impact and a sizable political agenda.

Plus by attacking the US they can raise money to continue thier lies about , "Climate Change," and other false enviromental accusations.

China does not react to their lies nor pay for their agenda so they are not attacked. It is all about money and politics and the only place where the Gorwellions get that type of recognition is right here in the good old USA.

Enviromentalism is a tough sell in a nation with 10% plus growth in GDP annually and no real democracy. But slowly, what politics can't do necessity may. Chinese cities are getting so poluted that it's affecting the work force and the quality of life.

Yeah, China has been a mess for a while now. Success/pollution, go figure.

My husband travels the world with his work and each time he's come back from China the air quality in Beijing, for example, has been worse and worse. There have been articles in newspapers here about the concern for the health of the track and field athletes, etc.

Wouldn't per capita CO2 emissions be a more useful point of comparison between the US and China? Considering that they have some 4x as many people, the fact that their CO2 output is 15% higher would make their per capita CO2 output significantly lower than the US.

Also, a major share of their CO2 emissions come from industry that is geared towards export. Due to China's position in the global supply chain it is a place where lots of countries outsource their pollution to. That isn't to say that CO2 and other pollution from China isn't a significant problem, it is. However, in an increasingly integrated economy it is impossible to separate pollution in China, deforestation in the Amazon, etc. from other regions.
